Burnt Sock Landing - The Creek Town of Little Ockchoyce

History2943 Johnson Rd, Bonifay, FL 32425, USA
Directions

The Native American inhabitants of Little Ockchoyce, a town on Holmes Creek, allied with the British during the American Revolution. The interpretive panel is in the middle of the Y of the road to the canoe/kayak launch.

One of the more unusually named places in Florida, this landing and spring supposedly takes its name from the practice of hunters enjoying a warm fire after hunting trips in the floodplain swamps of Holmes Creek. On one such occasion, they allowed the warmth of the fire to lull them to sleep with their feet extended in the direction of the fire so their wet socks would dry. They awakened to the smell of their scorched socks, and the name Burnt Sock has been applied to the place ever since.
